KENYAN STRANDED IN SAUDI WITHOUT PAY FOR 4 YEARS REUNITES WITH HER FAMILY

A Kenyan lady in Saudi Arabia who had been stranded at her employer’s house without pay for over 32 months has finally travelled to be with her family in Kenya.

Anne Njeri has been working as house help in Saudi Arabia for almost 4 years and her troubles begun when her employer started facing financial crises and wasn’t able to pay her monthly wages.

In late 2017 Anne Njeri raised her complaints to with the Kenyan embassy in Riyadh after her employer failed to keep his promise of paying her dues on numerous occasion. The Kenyan embassy thorough its labor attaché summoned the employer who in turn promised to pay Anne Njeri her wages. A promise that he failed to fulfill.

On several occasions the employer kept evading and ignoring calls from the embassy officials and in late 2018 the embassy reported the matter to the security authorities and the employer was ordered to appear at the nearest police station with Anne Njeri.

After the employer failed to appear at the police station, the authorities together with the Kenyan embassy begun a legal action against Anne’s employer. This included a warrant of arrest as well as locating his house.

In late April 2019, a team of security agencies which also included the Kenyan ambassador to Saudi Arabia Amb. Peter Ogego, embassy officials as well as Kenyans diaspora in Saudi Arabia leader Al Amin Eirrey located Anne Njeri’s employer’s house and were able to rescue her. Police immediately began questioning her employer and examined Anne Njeri for signs of torture and any other form of mistreatment she might have faced while stranded at her employers house.

Anne claimed that her employer was good to her and that her only cry for help was to be able to get her 32 months wages. She was immediately given a shelter through the embassy and other Kenyan well-wishers as the authorities begun legal action against her employer.

After a week, the employer was able to pay Anne Njer’s wages which included her air ticket through the embassy and witnessed by Saudi authorities. A cheerful Anne Njeri couldn’t hide her joy after she was paid her over 32 month’s salaries and was excited to be able to travel back to her family.

On 8th May 2019 she was escorted to the airport by officials from the Kenyan embassy as well as Kenyans from different walks of life as she ended her 4 years ordeal of working without pay.

Kenyans living in Saudi Arabia commended the efforts by the Kenyan embassy in Riyadh in helping distressed Kenyans facing various mistreatment in the Kingdom.
