WhatsApp’s new calling
service will soon be blocked in the Kingdom just few days after it was activated.
The new calling service that enables users to make free calls through the App’s platform will not be available through mobile phone networks as telecommunication companies are trying to prevent users from accessing the service through their networks.
The blocking process
of the service has already begun in other gulf countries such as UAE and it’s
said that other countries will follow suit and restrict users from using the
WhatsApp call feature through local telecommunication service provider’s
networks.
The WhatsApp voice
call service will be available to Wi-Fi networks only but will not be of the
same quality as using it through mobile phone networks.
Telecom regulators
are said to be setting new conditions for WhatsApp to comply with and this
means that the new free call service will not affect revenues of local telecom
providers who feel the new free call service will have a huge impact on their business.
In 2013, the Kingdom
banned Viber after it failed to comply with regulations set by CITC which
included monitoring user’s activities on such platforms.
