Authorities in Saudi
Capital Riyadh have released 29 Kenyan women who were arrested while engaging
in prostitution early February.
According to a lead
prosecutor in the case, the decision to drop the charges came after Kenyan embassy
officials led by deputy ambassador H.E Ibrahim Khamis Adan made representations
requesting Saudi authorities to have the case against the women dropped and
have them released.
Confirming the case,
Mr. Ibrahim said that the embassy intervened in the case requesting the Bureau
of Investigation and Prosecution to have the women released without any charges.
6 of the women have
already been deported back to Kenya while 23 have been transferred from jail been
held at an immigration detention center waiting to be deported.
Kenyan Deputy
Ambassador to Saudi Mr. Ibrahim urged Kenyans to be vigilant and shun all vices
and immoral acts that carry hefty punishment under the Kingdoms laws.
“Violation of local laws could lead to server
punishments and we urge Kenyans to respect and adhere to the laws of Saudi as
their host country”, said Mr. Ibrahim.
The Kenyan women
were arrested together with 3 Pakistani men after a raid that was conducted in
a residential building Dar AlBaida area, south of the capital Riyadh.
